Maersk and CMA CGM to work together on alt fuels
The collaboration will centre on the development of high standards for alternative fuels, including their full lifecycle analysis (LCA) and related greenhouse gasses, and will help to setting the framework of mass production of green methane and green methanol. Both CMA CGM and Maersk have invested directly in the production of alternative fuels, The Motorship notes.
A second area of focus relates to methanol as a fuel, and covers the development of standards for the operation of green methanol vessels with regards to safety and bunkering, as well as accelerating port readiness for bunkering and supply of bio/e-methanol at key ports around the world.
The third area of collaboration relates to joint R&D between the two companies into other new alternative fuels, such as ammonia, or innovation technology for the two companies’ ships.
The two companies have already begun to pursue their own paths towards net-zero targets for their businesses, and have invested in scalable solutions that can create lower their emissions before 2031. Both CMA CGM and Maersk have been ordering vessels capable of operating on bio/e-methanol, while CMA CGM has also been ordering LNG-fuellled vessels, that can also be operated on bio/e-methane.
Both companies expect the future fuel mix of shipping to include other solutions that are likely to develop in the coming years.
