Maersk expands fleet with LNG orders

While the new vessels will be equipped to run on LNG, Maersk has emphasised that this is not the primary fuel strategy. The company is actively pursuing bio-LNG as a cleaner alternative and is also considering methanol as a potential fuel source.

“We cannot afford to put all our eggs in one basket when it comes to decarbonisation,” said Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc. “The energy transition is complex, and we expect a range of technologies to compete for dominance in the coming years.”

The fleet expansion will be phased in between 2026 and 2030, replacing older vessels. While the initial focus is on dual-fuel capabilities, Maersk remains open to exploring other propulsion options as technology evolves. The company has already announced orders for 25 methanol-powered vessels, demonstrating its commitment to a diversified fuel strategy.
