MAN ES’ ME-GI engine orders pick up in LNG carrier segment
The engines will be constructed in South Korea by Hanwha Engine, with the contract including an option for two additional vessels. Each engine will be integrated with MAN Energy Solutions’ proprietary Exhaust Gas Recirculation ByPass (EGRBP) system.
Bjarne Foldager, head of two-stroke business at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the significance of the order: “It is very satisfying to see our ME-GI engine gaining further traction in the LNG carrier segment. The ME-GI’s mature technology ensures extremely low levels of methane slip, making it the most future-proof methane engine available.”
Christian Ludwig, head of two-stroke sales and promotion at MAN Energy Solutions, noted: “We have now secured over 890 ME-GI references, either on order or in service, with more than 110 of these in the LNGC segment. The ME-GI engine offers best-in-class performance, the highest thermal efficiency for methane-fuelled two-stroke engines, and has accumulated millions of reliable operating hours. Its ability to operate on bio-methane and synthetic natural gas provides shipowners with a viable decarbonisation pathway.”
The ME-GI engine has become an industry standard for two-stroke propulsion across multiple vessel types, including RoRo vessels, PCTCs, container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and LNG carriers. It delivers an environmentally friendly and high-efficiency solution while eliminating the high levels of methane slip that affect competing technologies. This has established the ME-GI as the preferred propulsion system for LNG-fuelled vessels.
The Diesel principle ensures that the ME-GI engine maintains high operational stability and efficiency, while also providing 100% reliable operation during load changes on gas with only normal levels of pilot-oil usage. Its operational principles allow for seamless transition between gas and diesel operation, making it the most environmentally friendly technology available in the LNG-fuelled two-stroke engine segment.
MAN Energy Solutions has also expanded its dual-fuel portfolio with the development of the ME-LGI (Liquid Gas Injection) engine, which enables the use of sustainable fuels such as green methanol, further supporting the industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
