Methane emissions initiative gains new members
New signatories of the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) include CoolCo, United Overseas Management, Capital Gas, Celsius Tankers, Global Meridian Holdings, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and TMS Cardiff Gas.
These join existing members Safetytech Accelerator, Maran Gas Maritime, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Carnival Corporation, Seaspan Corporation, Shell, Lloyd’s Register and Knutsen Group.
“The doubling of MAMII’s membership in the six months since its launch is a sign of the maritime industry’s commitment to addressing methane emissions,” said Panos Mitrou, global gas director at Lloyd’s Register.
“It also indicates the important role of technology in measuring and managing methane emissions activity. As the chairman of the MAMII initiative, I am delighted that so many significant shipping leaders have joined the ranks,” he added.
Led by Safetytech Accelerator, MAMII was formed in September 2022 to measure and manage methane emissions, minimising the environmental impact of liquefied natural gas in shipping and aiding the transition to future fuels.
LNG is understood to reduce emissions of CO2, NOx, SO2 and particulates but these benefits could be partially negated owing to the potential harm caused by unburned methane during the combustion process.
In its first six months, MAMII has already mapped the LNG fuel landscape from the well to the ship, identified key measurements required, and has identified a range of potential new technology for measurement on board ships.
