Multiple BWMS retrofits for De Nora

De Nora has been awarded a new contract for its Balpure BWMS

The Balpure Twin BP3000-C systems are capable of treating ballast water flow rates up to 6,000m3 per hour. It will be retrofitted in five crude oil tankers ranging in size from 125,000 dwt to 141,740 dwt.

Balpure utilises electrolytic disinfection technology with the aim to provide an economic and reliable blast water management approach.

By using a slip steam approach, where 0.5% to 1% of the total ballast water flow is used to generate the hypochlorite disinfection solution, the system can be mounted away from critical ballast systems.

This approach uses significantly less power when compared to other technologies leading to lower operational costs.

The units are also equipped with a proprietary coating developed by De Nora that ensures self-cleaning and aims to produce a high performance even in very low temperatures and low salinity waters.

Installations will being from mid-2016 and will continue until the end of 2018.

De Nora systems produce more than 1.3m kg per day of sodium hypochlorite from sea water. It has 3,500 electrochlorination installations in 60 countries and engineering, production and assembly facilities in Italy, the US and China.

The company has applied for USCG type approval and believes it will receive this certification soon. The Balpure system has been IMO type approved and USCG AMS certified.
