New guidelines for nickel ore cargoes
In order to address concerns about the loading of these cargoes, and in anticipation of growing demand for the establishment of safety guidelines for the carriage of nickel ore, ClassNK has released its new Guidelines for the safe carriage of nickel ore.
The guidelines provide comprehensive information on loading requirements (transportation procedures and technical requirements) for nickel ore cargoes based on both the requirements of the IMSBC code and ClassNK’s own independent findings. As comprehensive safety standards for the loading of nickel ore have yet to be formally established, information on the proposals to the IMO and other reference information have been included as appendices to the guidelines, which have been designed to be a handy one-volume reference for operators involved in the shipping of nickel ore cargoes.
In addition to the release of the new guidelines in Japanese, English, and Chinese editions in print and on its website, ClassNK will also provide certification services for the loading manuals of vessels involved in the transportation of nickel ore in line with the requirements laid out in the new guidelines.
