Norwegian company attracts offshore boiler orders
The company specialises in complete water heating systems, including boilers, tanks, pumps and heat exchangers, supplied to class society standards, including DNV, LRS, ABS and BV. The range includes the Parat ORO9, a complete steam and heat system designed for supply ships. The company aims for high efficiency and environmental compatibility, making full use of energy recovery from the ship’s engines, for example. The boilers produce hot water for heating, utilities and tank cleaning, and for oil recovery operations (ORO) onboard offshore supply ships, a jet system may be employed to provide direct steam injection in the recovery tanks. The jet system is approved by the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO).
One significant recent contract is a repeat order from Siem offshore, for one boiler system for each of four new dual-fuel VS4411 DF PSVs being constructed at Remontowa in Poland. The scope of supply includes combined electric steam and hot water boilers, each of 1,250kW capacity. In normal vessel operation the boiler supplies the HVAC, sanitary and tank heating systems, but can be re-mobilised to run as a steam boiler, maintaining viscosity in the recovered crude oil emulsion in the ORO storage tanks, in compliance with NOFO requirements.
A similar system is being supplied to Golden Energy Offshore, which is carrying out an upgrade to the 2005 Brattvaag-built PSV Energy Swan. The ship is being refitted by Westcon Yards to meet demands for vessels equipped for ORO in accordance with NOFO 2009 regulations. The Parat MEL-C 1,250kW combined electric steam and hot water boiler and oil recovery equipment is adapted for installation in the ship’s existing machinery room.
Another system, of similar function and capacity, and also equipped for ORO meeting NOFO 2090 requirements, is being supplied to Vard Brevik for a newbuild UT 776 PSV ordered by Island Offshore.
Parat says that its MEL-C electric boiler design has become popular with PSV builders, not only for the dual hot water/steam system capabilities, but also because compared with oil fired boilers is offers compact size, no separate fuel line, no pipe stack, easy regulation, no noise and lower maintenance.
