NYK ORDERS 12 LNG-FUELLED PCTCS FROM JAPANESE YARDS
A memorandum of understanding has been signed with Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. Shin Kurushima Dockyard is a long-term collaborator with NYK, and is due to deliver NYK’s second dual-fuel PCTC in 2022.
The 200 metre-long newbuildings share similar dimensions with NYK’s first LNG-fuelled PCTC, Sakura Leader, and will have a capacity of between 6,800 and 7,000 cars. The 12 dual-fuel PCTCs will be built sequentially, with the newbuildings to be delivered between 2025 and 2028.
In common with the Sakura Leader, the new vessels are expected to achieve approximately 40 percent fewer emissions compared to standard pure car and carriers. NYK noted that the order formed part of PCTC fleet replacement plan, as part of NYK’s broader environmental goal to halve CO2 emissions on a ton-kilometre basis by 2050.
While the financial details of the latest deal were not disclosed, the order lifts NYK’s total investment in LNG-fuelled PCTCs to about 200 billion yen (US$1.82 billion). NYK announced an order for four LNG-fuelled PCTCs from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd in February 2021, with deliveries due between 2022 and 2023.
