Orcan Energy PACKS for new dredgers
The contractor’s focus was on energy efficiency when designing its latest dredgers, Maas and Mersey, built by Dutch shipyard, Kooiman Marine Group. Both have been equipped with the Orcan Energy solution which can lower the overall fuel consumption by 4% to 5%, reducing the annual CO2 emissions of the new dredgers by almost 200 tonnes per vessel.
The two new dredgers represent Van Oord’s new generation of hybrid water injection vessels. With water injection dredging, mass flowing and power jetting systems, the vessels’ manoeuvrability and limited draught make them ideal for maintenance dredging in shallow harbours.
Orcan Energy has redesigned its efficiency PACK specifically for the marine industry. Compact, robust and built to withstand strong vibrations and shock loads at sea, the PACK uses components specially selected for the high temperatures in engine rooms.
This makes them ideal for making use of the waste heat on board to save energy. A heat exchanger transfers the waste heat from the engine jacket cooling water and exhaust gases to the ORC circuit where a non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerant evaporates and is fed as superheated vapour to the expansion machine, driving a generator.
