Port of Hamburg a leading light in shore power provision

Long recognised as a pioneer in this field, Hamburg has invested significantly in shore-side electricity for cruise ships, with wider expansion now underway for inland waterway and sea-going cargo vessels. The use of sustainably generated shore power is already playing a central role in shaping the port’s infrastructure, further cementing its status as a leader in environmental innovation within the European maritime sector.

By 2026, all cruise terminals in Hamburg will be equipped with shore power connections. This includes the existing facilities at Altona and Steinwerder, while the new terminal in HafenCity is set to receive its shore power installation next year, with trial operations also scheduled. For vessels to make use of the service, they must be individually certified and fitted with the appropriate on-board equipment.

The Hamburg Port Authority is working closely with shipping lines and port stakeholders to expand the use of shore power, and the initiative is already seeing strong uptake. Cruise operators are actively utilising the service, and with an increasing number of newbuilds and retrofits designed to accommodate shore power, this trend is expected to accelerate.

Formal agreements have already been signed with numerous cruise lines, including AIDA Cruises, MSC Cruises, TUI Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Phoenix Reisen, and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Building on this momentum, from 2027 onwards, the Port of Hamburg will generally require all shore power-capable cruise vessels calling at the port to connect to the system, leveraging the robust infrastructure already in place.
