Port of Trelleborg gets EU funding for shore power

The funding comes from the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which supports European transport infrastructure. This approval marks another step in the port’s ongoing commitment to greener shipping.

The initiative will see onshore power supply deployed at the ports of Trelleborg in Sweden and Lübeck-Travemünde in Germany, reducing emissions from vessels at berth. At Trelleborg, a significant portion of the supplied electricity will come from the port’s own wind turbines.

The project, titled “Baltic-Green-NET,” has been granted €2,230,500 for the installation. The Port of Trelleborg, serving as the project coordinator, is collaborating with Lübeck Port Authority to advance sustainable maritime operations.

“We are delighted with this support for another environmental investment. Our wind turbines will now supply our customers’ vessels with fossil-free electricity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions while ships are in port. This project strengthens the green shipping corridor between Sweden and Germany,” said Ulf Sonesson, landlord at the Port of Trelleborg.
