Practical Considerations for the Installation of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems

Interest in installing an exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) or scrubber has never been higher, as the IMO 2020 global sulphur limit requirements which will enter effect on 1 January 2020. As the remaining time to complete the installation of an EGCS elapses, it is more relevant than ever to understand how to effectively install a system.

This study, produced by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), addresses the practical issues surrounding the installation of an EGCS or scrubber. It outlines the regulatory requirements, including the requirement for approval from both a statutory and Class perspective and includes the review of the equipment.

It also provides a review of the onboard installation and introduces issues to be considered during the planning, procurement, engineering, installation, commissioning and operation of scrubbers. For example, it briefly covers the potential impact of retro-fitting a scrubber on the operation of the engine if excessive exhaust backpressure is generated, including additional fuel consumption due to lower turbocharger efficiency, increased component temperatures, and cause increased wear.
