The upgrade on board Atlantic Shrike has resulted in an 11% fuel savings across all operations and a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Facing increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gases and improve fuel efficiency, Atlantic Towing, a subsidiary of J.D. Irving, began upgrading the diesel-electric Atlantic Shrike in 2021.

Built in 2017 and operating off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, the vessel required a retrofit capable of withstanding harsh offshore conditions without compromising reliability.

“We needed a solution that enhanced energy efficiency and reduced emissions while keeping the vessel operational,” said Dan Vyselaar, director of Engineering & Asset Management at Atlantic Towing.

“The competence and collaboration shown by the Vard Electro team was impressive. They understood our operational needs and delivered a solution that works, both technically and commercially.”

Vard Electro, a subsidiary of the Fincantieri-owned Vard Group, delivered a full SeaQ ESS retrofit package, seamlessly integrating with Atlantic Shrike’s existing power systems.

The retrofit was conducted by the firm’s local Canadian team and coordinated with the vessel’s docking schedule to minimise downtime.

Since installation, Atlantic Shrike has achieved 362 tonnes of CO₂ reductions in 2024, reduced engine noise and extended maintenance intervals due to lower engine running hours.
