Rolls-Royce wins Havila EMS contract
The deal will see the system installed on four anchor handling tug supply ships, four platform supply vessels and one rescue and recovery vessel.
Kristian Kleiveland, Rolls-Royce sales manager – ship intelligence, said: “Having looked at a number of different options, Havila selected the Rolls-Royce EMS because of its ease-of-use and proven ability to optimise vessel operations.”
The system’s sensors assess fuel consumption against vessel speed, electrical load and the relationship between propeller pitch and RPM whilst existing dynamic positioning sensors are also used to calculate the external forces acting on the vessel. A key benefit is that the crew can see variations in fuel consumption in real time.
Olav Haug Vikebakk, deputy managing director, Havila Shipping, said: “For us, a key requirement was to find a crew-friendly solution to reducing fuel consumption.
“The tool allows us to implement operational changes in real-time to immediately reduce fuel consumption and reduce unnecessary running hours on equipment like generators. This has a positive effect not only on our operations from an environmental perspective, but also on the bottom line.”
The EMS was first introduced in November 2017 as part of a suite of vessel Intelligent Asset Management products and has since then been installed on over 50 vessels. The installations on Havila’s fleet are scheduled to be reporting fuel consumption trends, by 1 March 2019.
