Sick launches MARSIC emissions monitors

The marine-specific MARSIC monitors come in two forms: MARSIC200 performs cold-extractive measurements while MARSIC300 uses the hot-extractive principle. Both are DNV GL type-approved for SOX and CO2 measurements for scrubbers (upstream and downstream) and NOX measurements for selective catalytic reduction systems.

They can also be used to measure methane slip from LNG and dual-fuel engines. A single gas analyzer can manage up to four measurement points and up to nine exhaust gasses at the same time.

The MARSIC300 features a drift monitoring mechanism that simplifies complying with MARPOL regulations on maximum drift. An internal adjustment filter pivots an infrared beam upstream of the detector to measure the light attenuation of the emission gas component and perform a comparison with the master calibration (performed at the factory). This ensures that the entire beam path from the light source to the detector is checked without interruption.

Unlike many products on the market, the monitor only needs recalibrating after replacing optical parts – minimising the time and manpower needed. Sick notes that expensive calibration gases and filing of expired test gas certificates are no longer necessary thanks to the automatic testing process.

The monitors are also said to offer long maintenance intervals and simple service procedures, thanks to their modular design – allowing easy servicing by an onboard engineer – and a focus on minimising the number of moving parts. Sick also offers a remote servicing facility, and can supply spare parts from its network of operations in more than 80 countries.

The new monitors boast DNV GL type approval and certification with respect to MARPOL Annex VI, the NOx Technical Code 2008, and MEPC.184(59).
