Sohar in biofuel shipment first
The biofuel – produced locally from cooking oil – was delivered in cooperation with Svitzer, Woqod and Hormuz Marine.
Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of Sohar Industrial Port, said that the use of biofuels will significantly contribute to reducing the level of harmful emissions. “This project is an example to be emulated in the region and beyond,” he said.
The port estimates using biofuel for its tugs will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 17%, helping the country achieve its net zero by 2050 plan.
The project is a culmination of efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and its strategic partners in the Omani ports to develop plans to achieve zero carbon neutrality in Oman by 2050.
The ministry is working with other government agencies to implement 18 carbon laboratory initiatives in the field of green ports.
It has devised a roadmap for projects to reduce emissions, modify equipment to operate with electric power and smart systems, connect ships to electric power and decarbonise the ports sector. The strategy will also establish a regional centre for supplying vessels with clean fuel.
