The MR-class vessels will have a deadweight of 51,000 tonnes, an ice class of B1 and will transport petroleum products and gas condensate. All three will be chartered to Novatek under long term contracts.

Compared to engines burning standard marine fuels, LNG-powered engines are said to release 27 per cent less CO2, 85 per cent less NOx as well as reducing SOx emissions and particulate matters to zero.

The technical specification of the tankers reflects the international regulatory limits on sulphur, nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions, which will come into effect in 2020.

In September 2018, SCF Group also ordered two 114,000dwt LNG-fuelled Aframax crude oil tankers from Zvezda.
