STX given AIP for new LNG-fuelled MR tanker

STX incorporated an LNG-fuelled propulsion system into its conventional MR tanker design. LR provided technical assistance to ensure that the design complies with both new regulations under the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels code and LR’s own Gas Fuelled Rules. LR also supported STX in carrying out a risk assessment of the propulsion system.

Mr EK Choi, chief technical officer of STX, said: “STX has an extensive reference list for designing and building MR tankers. The design enables the lowest possible fuel consumption and allow owners to select a design that will meet the future SOx and NOx emission challenges.”

Presenting the approval in principle, LR’s North Asia technical support office manager, Young-Doo Kim, said: “It’s been an exciting project where we are delighted to have been able to support STX in incorporating LNG as a fuel option.”
