Valmet automation for Danish E-ferry
The fully battery powered E-ferry will connect the island of Aeroe in the Baltic Sea with the Danish mainland. It will be equipped with a 4.MWh battery system, said to be the largest battery installation on any ferry. It is estimated that the new ferry will reduce annual emissions by around 2,000 tonnes of CO2 and 41.5 tonnes of NOx compared with a similar-sized diesel-powered ferry.
Valmet’s delivery will include an integrated automation system (IAS) to cover the control, alarm and monitoring of machinery systems. It will also supply a bridge remote control system for the electric propulsion drives and bow thrusters. The delivery also includes a history and analyzing station that will collect data from both Visedo’s electric power management and consumption control systems.
The Valmet DNA automation system features fully redundant process controllers and multifunctional operator stations. The remote control system includes touch-screen panels and an electric shafting system for fast and secure transfer of operation command between the control positions.
The equipment delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2017. E-ferry has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, which promotes energy-efficient, zero greenhouse gas emissions and pollution-free waterborne transportation.
