Terntank orders methanol/wind tankers
The 15,000 dwt tankers have been designed by Kongsberg and will be built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard ready for delivery in 2025.
The vessels will be developed from the experience of the owner’s previous six AVIC Series vessels. In addition to the 40% CO2 reductions achieved for this series through a hybrid battery system and the use of shore power, wind assistance will reduce the emissions by a further 8%. The use of methanol will accelerate the company’s pathway to net zero.
The vessel’s feature Terntank’s Hybrid Solution® which is a combination of battery pack, shore power connection and a DC-Link system. The system enables the ships to perform fossil free port operations and also enables peak shaving to reduce the emissions even further. The battery packs also act as reserve to provide an energy reserve for power generation, limiting unnecessary parallel running of generators and provides a blackout prevention function that keeps the electrical network alive.
The latest vessels equipped with Terntank’s Hybrid Solution® (Tern Island and Tern Fors) have been in operation for a year and have proved that the battery pack and shore power connection technology works.
The efficient design of the new vessels ordered results in an EEDI between 16-40% below the 2025 Phase 3 requirements.
The vessels are built with 14 segerations and are tailor made to optimally be able to transport bio feedstocks to refineries and then load the finished goods to depots.
