WinGD X-DF engines for Novatek LNGCs
The newbuilding LNG carriers will be constructed at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and are slated for delivery from 2023 to 2024.
The order was announced following the conclusion of a long-term charter agreement between joint-venture partners Sovcomflot and NYK and Novatek’s subsidiary, Novatek Gas and Power Asia, on 30 September 2021.
The online signing ceremony was attended by Sovcomflot’s President & CEO Igor Tonkovidov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of PAO NOVATEK Evgeniy Ambrosov, and the Chief Executive of Energy Division at NYK, Akira Kono.
Sovcomflot and NYK jointly won the tender to contract the vessels following a process launched earlier this year.
The new vessels’ design will meet the latest environmental standards, Sovcomflot noted. Each vessel would be equipped with an advanced GTT Mark III Flex cargo containment system, a reliquefaction unit to return the gas to the cargo tank, as well as a shaft generator system.
The new gas carriers will load cargoes produced at PAO Novatek’s Arctic projects at two FSUs (floating storage units), located near Murmansk in the west and Kamchatka at the eastern end of the Northern Sea Route. The LNG shipments will be shipped to Europe, Asia, as well as for regular trade operations in the global market.
Sovcomflot’s President & CEO Igor Tonkovidov commented that the contracts represented “an important step” in the development of Sovcomflot’s cooperation with NYK. The two companies are already cooperating in two LNG transportation projects, Sakhalin 2 and Tangguh.
