BWMS approval submissions in US reach double figures

A spate of recent applications – for De Nora’s Balpure, Techcross’ Electro-Cleen and Samsung Heavy Industries’ Purimar BWMS as well as BIO-UV’s – have seen the number of applications grow from six to 10 since October last year. To date, six of the ten applicants have received type approval that will allow their systems to be used on a permanent basis on ships in US waters.

BIO-SEA’s system uses a combination of filtration and ultra-violet light treatment to neutralise organisms in ballast water. The company is seeking approval for systems with flow rates of 60 to 2,000m3/h, with testing supervised by DNV GL.

Optimarin, the first BWMS provider to receive full type approval, submitted its application with USCG in September 2016. Approval was granted in late December that year.
