BIO-UV unveils portable BWTS
With offshore wind projects expanding rapidly, floating platforms crossing territorial waters face increasing regulatory pressure under the Ballast Water Management Convention. Addressing this, BIO-UV’s new portable solution enables on-site ballast water treatment during the assembly, transport and maintenance of floating windmills.
“While the maritime industry has made significant strides in ballast water compliance, the floating offshore wind sector is just beginning to recognise its obligations,” said Charlene Ceresola, project manager at BIO-UV Group. “Our system offers a portable, scalable solution that meets these needs effectively.”
Backed by the EU’s ELBE EUROCLUSTER programme in 2024, BIO-UV adapted its type-approved BIO-SEA system into a standard teu container. Trials of a 300m³/h unit at the Euroports-operated Port-la-Nouvelle confirmed its performance, including a separate waste treatment line for filter backwash water – a key difference from onboard systems.
Despite challenges with biological sampling, discharge consistently met the D-2 standard. “The modularity and portability of this solution make it ideal not only for offshore wind projects but also for emergency use by ships facing ballast water management system failures,” Ceresola added.
Phase Two of the project, running through late 2024, focuses on market analysis and stakeholder engagement. BIO-UV has already launched the first commercial rollout under a ‘ballast as a service’ rental scheme.
Interest is growing across Mediterranean ports, particularly through the EU’s Treasure programme. “We can now provide ports and harbours with a practical, scalable solution, paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient future,” said Ceresola.
