Bio-Sea BWMS for CMA CGM flagship

The 400m long, 20,600 teu vessel is one of the largest containerships to be built by Hanjin Heavy Industries’ yard in Subic Bay. BIO-UV installed a 2,000m3//h capacity system ahead of the ship’s christening earlier this month.

The Bio-Sea system, which uses a screen filter and patented UV disinfection technology, will also be installed on nine 22,000 teu containerships under construction for CMA CGM in China.

Benoit Gillmann, president and CEO, BIO-UV Group, said: “We anticipate a significant spike in ballast water retrofits over the next two to three years. Taking newbuilds and retrofits into account, the market is worth more than €7.5 billion and if Bio-Sea can account for just 5% of this over the next six years or so, then we would be very happy indeed.”

Depending on the size of the system, BIO-UV can supply its units within 8 to 12 weeks, with each system designed and built at the French company’s production plant in Lunel. Xavier Deval, business director, Bio-Sea, predicted a boom in sales in 2020-2021 that could result in increased lead times for owners that leave it late to order systems.
