DESMI introduces BWMS versions targeted at regional and bulker markets

Desmi's CompactClean Bulker BWMS received USCG Type Approval in January.

The new version, the CompactClean OptIMO, is adapted to the requirements of vessels primarily operating in IMO waters. The solution offers capex and opex savings compared with the company’s CompactClean BWMS, which does not employ special flow reduction when operated in US compliance mode. The solution has reduced power consumption and fewer UV lamps, offering capex and opex savings, as well as an even smaller footprint than CompactClean BWMS.

The solution is suitable for vessels that do not need to operate the BWMS at max flowrate in US compliance mode, either because US waters are never entered or because the vessel’s operation profile allows the discharge of ballast water at a reduced flowrate when in US waters.

“Not all ships are engaged in global trade but rather in regional or domestic trade, and as such a significant part of the world fleet will never, or only rarely, enter US waters. Such vessels can benefit of a BWMS solution that is optimized to IMO requirements and not US Coast Guard requirements, and this is exactly what we have developed with our new CompactClean OptIMO BWMS”, says Rasmus Folsø, CEO DESMI Ocean Guard.

The solution extends the recent introduction of the CompactClean Bulker solution, which is designed specifically for bulk carriers. The version has been awarded approval by both the US Coast Guard and the Danish Maritime Authority.

The product is optimised for the different flow rates sometimes required by bulkers during loading and unloading of cargoes. The solution offers a BWMS that will allow one flowrate during ballast, and another and higher flowrate during de-ballast.

The solution offers reduced capex and opex costs, as the filter can be downsized to match the lower flow during ballast, lowering potential replacement costs over the life of the BWMS.
